Criteria to guide the selection of candidates
1. NJAEYC seeks to be continually
informed by the wisdom of diversity and to become a more
high-performing, inclusive organization. As such the board is committed
to maintaining a Board composition reflecting diversity in ethnicity,
professional experience, gender, age, and geographic area.
2. All candidates must be current members
of NJAEYC.
3. The following goals will guide the
development of the slate of candidates individually and as a group
reflect; (in order of priority)
- High quality leadership with
commitment and contributions to the field of early care and
education;
- Understanding the mission, vision,
goals and code of ethics of NJAEYC;
- Broad knowledge and awareness of
issues facing the field and ability to conceptualize the appropriate
role for the Association.
- Demonstrated awareness of the
Association's priority to be a highly functioning organization that
is continually enriched by its institutional commitment to diversity
and inclusion.
- Strong interpersonal skills with
ability to objectively consider various perspectives to guide major
policy decisions of the Association;
- Expertise in special areas needed by
the Association, including knowledge of governance and group
functioning, management skills, finance skills and knowledge of
NAEYC;
- The ability to be a public
spokesperson on behalf of the Association, and h. The time required
to provide the necessary vision and leadership to serve effectively
as a governing board member.
Background information from potential
candidate
To be considered in the nomination process, individuals are asked to
submit (by the deadline) a statement of interest, a current resume, and
a maximum of 3 letters of recommendation. The letters should reflect the
individual's professional experience and expertise, leadership in the
profession (including affiliate experience,) and leadership in the
community.
The nominating committee will acknowledge
each candidate upon receipt of the application.
Rating procedure
The nominating committee will make independent ratings of each candidate
based upon the criteria listed above as well as suitability to the
particular office. A conference call among all committee members will
allow committee members to discuss the ratings, who will be placed on
the slate, and who will be interviewed if warranted.
Selection of slate
The nominating committee conducts interviews and formulates a slate to
present to the board for approval. The proposed slate is mailed to
governing board members and voted on in a meeting conducted by phone.
All candidates will then be notified in writing regarding their
candidacy.

VP Public Relations
Term of office: 2 years
Purpose: To promote the vision and
mission of NJAEYC on the local, state and national level.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee the
Public Policy, Media, Membership, and the Month of the Young
Child Committees.
- Facilitate
communication among and between committees and the Board.
- Nurture the
development of potential leaders
- Represent
his/her committees at Executive Committee and Board meetings.
- Serve as ex
officio member of committees and may attend their meetings.
Qualifications:
- A member of
NJAEYC and NAEYC
- A commitment
to NJAEYC and its values
- An
understanding of NJAEYC’s vision, mission, goals and objectives,
and services
- An
understanding of the responsibilities and relationship of paid
and volunteer staff
- Knowledge of
and influence in the early childhood community
Committees
- Public Policy—Purpose: To keep
abreast of all public policy impacting children and families at
the local, state and federal levels, in order to provide
analysis and recommendations to the Board,
- Media—Purpose: To provide a
variety of communication paths for the dissemination and receipt
of information.
- Month of the Young
Child—Purpose: To support, encourage and develop ways to educate
the community on the importance of early childhood education; to
coordinate a statewide event; and to assist local affiliates
with regional events.

Vice President of
Affiliate Relations
Term of Office:
2 years
Purpose: To maintain the link
between local, state, and national affiliates.
Responsibilities
- Oversee
Affiliate Council Representatives and appoint and oversee
Members-At-Large.
- Provide
technical assistance, support and resources to local affiliates.
- Facilitate
communication among and between committees and the Board
- Nurture the
development of potential leaders
- Represent
his/her committees at Executive Committee and Board meetings
- Serves as ex
officio as a member of committees and may attend their meetings.
Qualifications:
- A member of
NJAEYC and NAEYC
- A commitment
to NJAEYC and its values
- An
understanding of NJAEYC’s vision, mission, goals and objectives,
and services
- An
understanding of the responsibilities and relationship of paid
and volunteer staff
- Knowledge of
and influence in the early childhood community
- Experience
and/or interest in event planning, such as, but not limited to,
board retreats and orientation

Treasurer
Term of Office:
2 years, no term limit
Responsibilities:
- Serve as
financial officer of the Association and as a member of Finance
Committee.
- Manage, with
the Finance Committee, the board’s review of and action related
to the board’s financial responsibilities.
- Ensure that
appropriate financial reports are made available to the board on
a timely basis.
- Prepare the
Annual Budget with the Finance Committee.
- Present the
Annual Budget to the Executive Committee for review and
recommendations to NJAEYC Board for approval.
- Work with the
Finance Committee to establish the annual review and ensure its
completion in a timely manner.
- Review the
annual audit and answers board members’ questions regarding the
review.
- Ensure
development and board review of financial policies and
procedures.
- Monitor the
receipt of all money due to and held by the Association.
- Ensure that
all funds are properly deposited in Association’s designated
bank account.
- Ensure that
the Association maintains tax-exempt status.
- Sign financial
forms and instruments as required.
- Ensures the
safety of principal, liquidity and a competitive rate of return
on investments.
- Pay creditors
according to the policy and procedures of the Association.
- Provide
reimbursements to board members in accordance with the policy
and procedures of the Association.
- Oversee
implementation of NJAEYC financial policies and guides the Board
on monetary matters.
- Oversee the
maintenance of monthly and annual financial records and reports
including report of income, expenses, investments, and balances.
- Files any
federal or state tax forms.
Qualifications:
- A commitment
to NJAEYC and its values
- An
understanding of NJAEYC’s vision, mission, goals and objectives,
and services
- An
understanding of the responsibilities and relationship of paid
and volunteer staff
- Knowledge of
and influence in the early childhood community
- Ability to
understand concepts and articulate idea.
- An
understanding of financial accounting for nonprofit
organizations
